Nourishing the Mother

Dear Bliss Babies,
Welcome to our Bliss Baby Yoga October Newsletter. 
Life after the birth of a new baby presents us with some of the most challenging times during parenthood.  What a woman does within those first early weeks of settling in with her newborn influences her ability to care for her baby and herself going forth. Our modern culture promotes the unhelpful idea of the ‘Supermum’ which more often than not leads to physical, emotional and mental exhaustion for a new mother.  Babies thrive when their mothers are rested, calm and healthy.  
The idea of surrender or ‘Ishvara Pranidhana’  is a constant in motherhood, and comprises the final component of the personal moral ‘restraints’ or Niyamas of the ancient yoga text, “The Yoga Sutras”. In this month’s newsletter we explore what Ishvara Pranidhana means and some of the ways that the tools of yoga can help nurture and support a woman – in all stages of motherhood.  
Bliss Baby Teacher Trainer, Mari Notaras explores the benefits of Restorative Yoga for new mothers in her article Mother Me – Restorative Yoga for Mummy Only, and how these delicious classes can help a woman adapt, surrender and nurture herself during these rapid changes into motherhood. We also share a wholesome, Postnatal Nourishing Chicken Soup Recipe, that we can prepare with lots of love for our new mummy friends, to help them with their healing, nourishment and self care in these early days of motherhood.
Lastly, my experience of parenthood has now journeyed into the tween years and my article, Yogic Lessons for Parents reflects on the lessons that motherhood has taught me though the first twelve years of my son’s life and how these ideas might prepare me for the teenage years ahead. 
The themes of surrender, acceptance and self care are guiding principles in all of our Bliss Baby Yoga Courses.
